Composting on Campus
We've partnered with CampaignGW to implement their pre-existing composting collection
infrastructure into residence halls. Starting in the spring of 2018, CampaignGW set up compost collection tables for 2-3 hours weekly, later expanding to the Mount Vernon Campus. In the first year and a half of the program, students collected an average of 400 pounds per
week of compostable material.
Through social media promotion as well as advocacy through our Hall Councils, students were encouraged to freeze their compost in community kitchen bins or in their own freezers, which were then returned to Sustainability GW to collect weekly. Compost collection has advanced the University's sustainable goals considerably by reducing food waste, and continues to be a program in progress.
